ABOUT US
We are long-term residents; many of us born, raised and still living on the Lower East Side. We care about what’s going on in our neighborhood.
OUR MISSION
To cultivate, promote, represent and advocate community interests of preserving affordability, appropriate and diverse commercial and residential community development, disaster recovery preparedness, resiliency and environmental quality, crime reduction, leadership support, transportation, commuting and infrastructure
WE CARE ABOUT
- Preserving Affordability
We are concerned about the loss of affordability to community residents and businesses.
The Garfield, the Crossroads, Extell and numerous new buildings already built or going up in our neighborhood are clearly not targeted to socioeconomic status of too many current residents of our community. - Affordable/Convenient Supermarket
We want a suitable replacement to Pathmark.
LES residents may appreciate good quality food but it must be affordable and accessible. - Recreational Resources
We want appropriate community programming and resources included in new development.
Pier 42, Pier 35, Pier 36 behind Basketball City, Esplanade Pavilions, HCC community space - Basic Public Resources
We care about our public spaces and resources.
Our public schools, after-school programs, public parks & playgrounds, etc. - Crime Reduction
We are concerned with crime and hot spots
With the help of the community we can aid law enforcement in focusing their efforts more effectively to produce a safer environment for ourselves and our children - Other Community Organizations & Funding
We want to make better use of community organizations active in our community and the funds that are being earmarked and allocated for use in our community from public or private benefactors.
We must ensure that monies being secured on our behalf are going to the right organizations if not our very own organization and that we are getting our bank for our buck - Community Representation
We want to represent ourselves as residents of the Lower East Side waterfront.
Community organizations may engage us and help us, but no longer represent us without our involvement.
WE ARE WORKING ON
- True Community Outreach
Provide a means of true outreach to our friends, family and neighbors in the Lower East Side waterfront community through the use of social media, other technology and direct engagement. - Advancing True Community Interests
Organizing all community input into clear community requests and proposals that we will take to the appropriate public/private organization. - Providing Better Information
Provide useful information to our community particularly regarding the interests described here. - Recruitment
Build membership to support the above objectives and interests. - Empowering Our Community
Build a voting block to empower us, give us ‘standing’ and elect people who will serve our community’s interests
